First Missouri Credit Union president and CEO Steve Ogolin Ogolin retired on Jan. 5, after more than 40 years with the credit union. During his tenure, Ogolin ushered First Missouri through a name change, from St. Andrew Credit Union, and into the 21st century by adding debit cards, 24/7 account access, plus an expanded network of branches and ATMs.
Ogolin is proud of the progress and improvements First Missouri Credit Union made while he was president. “The credit union’s goal has always been to offer affordable financial solutions to our community,” he says. “By keeping members at the front of our minds in everything we do, we accomplish that goal, while growing and remaining financially sound.”
Ogolin came to First Missouri in October 1979 from St. Louis County Government Employees Credit Union (now County Credit Union) in Clayton. He started there as a teller, but Ogolin’s responsibilities steadily increased, and he worked his way up to a position comparable to vice president. A 43-year veteran of the financial services industry, Ogolin comes from a family of credit union advocates and learned early the importance of helping people. Additionally, he graduated cum laude from Maryville University with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration.
The credit union’s Executive Vice President, Steve Poniewaz has stepped into the President/CEO position. “Our board of directors, volunteers and staff – myself especially – deeply appreciate Steve’s service to First Missouri Credit Union and our members,” says Poniewaz. “He built a strong foundation, which we will use to shape First Missouri’s future.”
A life-long supporter of the credit union movement, Ogolin supported Credit Union Service Organizations, the Corporate Credit Union, Heartland Credit Union Association and the St. Louis Chapter of Credit Unions. In the community, he has also volunteered with the Lemay Chamber of Commerce for more than 20 years and currently serves on its board of directors. And Ogolin was the Housing Partnership’s founding chairman, when it was known as the Lemay Housing Partnership.
“Steve serves not only the members of First Missouri Credit Union, but he also volunteers his time and expertise to help other credit unions and organizations,” says Lynn Beauchaine, FMCU board secretary and volunteer. “He truly believes and lives the ‘people helping people’ philosophy.”
